I have been trying for some time to create a morning routine that works for me. It hasn’t been easy, as schedules change, plans change, life changes, and every morning can’t really look the same for me. So I would stick to a morning routine for some days, when I had enough time, but then on other days when I was more rushed, I would just skip most of it.

But I found that these 10 simple ideas are the ones that have worked best for me and I have been able to stick of it and make the most out of my mornings!

Why do I want a morning routine?

Every person is different. We can have completely different styles of lives, some are more busy, others more relaxed. But in general, we all want to be productive, to be happy, to enjoy each day.

  • For me, a morning routine helps me not stay in bed for too long and then feel tired all day,
  • it helps me give me energy to start my day and do the things I need to do,
  • it makes me start the day in a happier mood,
  • and it also makes me feel healthier and stronger as I create better habits for me.

As every person is different, these ideas won’t work for everybody the same way. Maybe you need more structure, or maybe you need more freedom. But I have found that these 10 ideas really work for me, so I want to share them with you.

1 | Wake up earlier than you need to

I’ve read several times that you should wake up super early, and they give you a specific time, like 5:00am or even earlier, for when you need to start your day. I don’t think that works for everybody. I think the best thing is to wake up earlier than you need to. If you need to wake up at a certain hour to go to work, or to start your daily tasks, wake up at least 30 minutes to 1 hour earlier than that. That way you’ll have time for yourself, to create your morning routine and not be in a hurry.

If you are always waking up 10 minutes before you have to go, to grab a poptart and run to the door, you are skipping on life, on greeting your day with a happy attitude, and preparing your mind to be productive.

I don’t ever hit the snooze button anymore. I stand up right away. At first it was hard, but then it just became easier and easier. When my alarm goes off, my body knows that it’s time to get out of bed.

To make this easier, do this the night before: Go to bed early enough to sleep at least 7 hours. That way you will have rested well and wake up with more energy.

2 | Drink some water

Your body won’t work if it is dehydrated. You have been sleeping for many hours, you need water!

It helps your metabolism and strenghten your immune system. And it’s so easy!

3 | Quick clean the bathroom

This has been a not so easy lesson for me. But I assure you that it’s such a good idea. Right after you wake up and drink your water, go and wipe the bathroom sink and toilet. Just some sprays of a cleaning product and a rag or paper towell, wipe it and done. Your bathroom will always look clean. If people come over, they will always see a clean bathroom.

To make this easier, do this the night before: Put your cleaning products in the bathroom so you can grab them easily when you wake up in the morning.

4 | Have a good breakfast

It doesn’t have to be a big fancy breakfast. I know, it’s always easier to just take some sugary thing and not have to do any work, but that will just make you feel hungry again a bit later.

You can make a list of easy breakfast ideas for when you don’t have much time in the morning. A simple sandwish, a healthy cereal, or an instant oatmeal, are always quick to make. But do try to enjoy your meal, take your time to taste it and enjoy the moment!

To make this easier, do this the night before: Decide what you want to make for breakfast and make sure that you have all the ingredients needed for it.

5 | Read a few pages

It’s always hard for me to take time from my busy day to read a few pages of my book. But if I do it in the morning, before I start my work, then I always have the time! I just read a chapter, or even half of it if it’s long, and it helps me relax and start my day with something interesting to think about.

This month I’ve been reading To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, by Jenny Han with my friend, and we’ve been enjoying it so far! You can also read a few pages of the Bible in the morning, an inspiring blog post, an interesting article, or anything! As long as you take a moment to take your mind to a different world for a few minutes and have fun!

To make this easier, do this the night before: Get your book ready on the table or sofa so you don’t forget to read at least a little bit.

6 | Stretch or do a short workout

It will really help you to wake up and get the energy that you need for your day! You don’t have to go running or go to the gym. You can do a short workout, take a walk, or even dance around your room!

To make this easier, do this the night before: Find a video routine that you want to do and get it ready to do it in the morning. Or if you decide that you want to take a walk around the neighborhood in the morning, get your shoes and clothes ready where you can grab them easily when you wake up.

7 | Get ready: clothes, hair, and face!

If you stay in your pajamas all day, it’s going to be really easy to go back to bed, “just for a few minutes” at first, “only while I watch this video” you might say, and then the day goes by and you spent it on bed or lying down on the sofa!

I like to put on my “work from home” clothes early in the morning, fix my hair and face a bit, so I don’t look like I just woke up, and get ready for my productive day.

To make this easier, do this the night before: Set the clothes that you want to use the next day, so you don’t have to think about it in the morning.

8 | Make the bed

Making the bed is a really easy step that will help you feel more organized and make your house and room look and feel better. It also will make it harder for you to go back to bed after you have already started your day!

9 | Quick pick up around the house

Take just 2 or 3 minutes to go around the house and put things back in their place. Sofa cushions, clean plates, the tv remote, the pens on your desk, all those little things can go back where they belong and it will make a difference on how your house feels in the morning. Now if you don’t have enough time in your day to clean anything else, at least your house looks organized!

10 | Open your planner

Now it’s time to open up your planner and work on your tasks for the day. Because everything else is out of the way, you can feel free to get to work without anything else distracting you.
