Summer vacation is here! That means enjoying the outdoors and catching some rays. Even if you don’t go out to the beach, or maybe a park, you can have some vacation fun in your own backyard.

Check out these landscaping ideas to get your backyard ready for summer and enjoy the outdoors in the comfort of your home.

Landscaping ideas:

Flowers (of course!)

When you think about a garden, you immediately think flowers. In fact, planting some flowers in your backyard is the most common of landscaping ideas.  However, to make your backyard a relaxing space to enjoy, you could plant aromatic flowers, like lavender. Also, planting your favorite kind of flowers will surely make you smile each time you go outside. On the other hand, if you are not much of a gardener, you can look for flowers that are easy to care for (like these). Even in a small space, or even mostly concrete space, flowers will surely liven it up.

Garden Spaces

 Choose a Theme

Another great idea is to pick a theme and stick with it. For example, your theme could be cactus and succulents! Or maybe a theme that is more about decoration choices, like Asian inspired.

South County Succulents

Don’t underestimate rocks

Speaking of Asian inspired, rocks and/or pebbles can look amazing in a garden. Not everything has to be a grass lawn or plants. A few big rocks in a garden can break the monotony, and small rocks can make a great pathway, or even work for the whole space.

Water Fountain Sound Therapy

Ok, I know, this could get expensive, and it could take up a lot of space. But even a very small fountain could give your backyard a special touch. Not only that; the sound of a water fountain can be so relaxing and soothing!

Edible garden

Yes, this will definitely require a lot more effort. Having a vegetable garden means having to learn a little bit about growing and caring for plants that will provide food. But ultimately, having herbs or vegetables right in your backyard will not only save you the trip to the supermarket, but it will also make you feel so proud to grow your own food! And your backyard can still look beautiful even with a very small vegetable garden.

Seating options

In a larger backyard space, seating is a great idea. The whole family could have dinner outdoors once in a while! You could also use the space for entertaining friends. If you don’t have much space, just a couple of chairs, or even a small bench, could still work to provide a seating option where you could enjoy reading a nice book while catching some rays.

Beautiful Small Landscape

Add some lighting

Lighting will keep your landscaping looking amazing even at night. Some nice little string lights over your backyard, or even some small solar lamps around your garden can give it a great touch.

I have always loved nature and find the need to be surrounded by it each day. We will soon be moving into our new home and I am looking for new landscaping ideas to help me feel more at ease with the move. I love what you mentioned about adding a water fountain for sound therapy. I can imagine myself closing my eyes and being more capable of relaxing with this addition to the yard.

Great post here Cora. I agree with your backyard being a place where you can escape from reality, even if it’s for a few minutes.
